The WestJet Group has appointed Jacqui McGillivray as its Executive Vice-President and Chief People Officer, effective Oct. 7, 2024, replacing Angela Avery, who announced her retirement earlier this year. Avery will continue in an advisory role to aid in the transition, the company announced on October 2.
McGillivray brings over three decades of experience in HR and organizational change to the role. WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech highlighted McGillivray’s track record in transforming global organizations and leading high-performing teams.
“Jacqui brings a wealth of HR and organizational change experience, along with a notable track record of leading results-oriented, multi-disciplinary, and culturally strong teams in unlocking value and sustaining growth,” von Hoensbroech said. “We are thrilled to welcome Jacqui at this vital time as we look to build on the momentum of our growth strategy.”
Before joining WestJet, McGillivray served as Executive Vice-President, Chief People and Social Impact Officer at Element Fleet Management, where she played a significant role in driving the organization’s transformation. She has also held executive roles at Cenovus Energy, Talisman Energy, and RBC Royal Bank, with a focus on HR, safety, and organizational effectiveness.
McGillivray expressed enthusiasm about her new position and WestJet’s direction.
“As a Calgary resident for the past 14 years, I have been closely following WestJet’s journey and recent strategic shift,” she said. “I am incredibly impressed by the discipline and resolve of the leadership team… I am thrilled to join this Canadian aviation success story and to play a part in a bright and sustainable future for our guests, our people, and the communities we serve.”
WestJet, which began operations in 1996, has grown to employ over 14,000 people and now serves more than 100 destinations in 25 countries.
