Nearly 200 employees of the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) volunteered 1,474 hours during the second quarter, participating in community projects such as wildfire recovery efforts and supporting the Special Olympics.
NSLC team members worked with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild a home lost to the wildfires in Hammonds Plains in May 2023. They also took part in Pride parades across Nova Scotia and volunteered at the 2024 Special Olympics Nova Scotia Provincial Summer Games held at Acadia University in July. As the official Volunteer Program Partner for the games, 30 employees assisted with tasks including event timing, athlete and volunteer sign-ins, and ceremonies.
“We are always looking for ways to make a positive impact and give back to our communities, and I am very proud of our team for their continued commitment to helping others,” said Greg Hughes, president and CEO of NSLC. “Thanks to the generosity of our shoppers and supplier partners, our contributions are even greater.”
In addition to volunteering time, NSLC team members raised $77,150 for Feed Nova Scotia during the Labour Day Weekend at-cash fundraiser.
The NSLC also released its second-quarter financial results, reporting a 0.5 per cent increase in earnings to $83.8 million. Total sales rose 1.5 per cent to $245.8 million compared to the same period last year, with beverage alcohol sales increasing 1.2 per cent to $213.2 million and cannabis sales up 3.9 per cent to $32.6 million.
Employee efforts extended to enforcing responsible sales practices. Frontline employees asked for valid photo ID 572,313 times and refused service 3,684 times to customers who appeared under the age of 30.
