Paula Campkin is stepping down as vice-president of operations at Energy Safety Canada, bringing to a close a nearly 30-year career in human resources and occupational health and safety that has left a lasting mark on the energy sector and the field of workplace safety.

In a personal statement shared on LinkedIn, Campkin said the decision to retire comes with “a mix of emotions,” as she looks ahead to a new chapter after almost two decades with the organization.

“After an incredibly rewarding career of close to 30 years in Human Resources and Occupational Health and Safety, the time has come for me to embrace the next chapter,” she wrote.

Campkin joined Enform — the predecessor to Energy Safety Canada — in 2007 and held a range of senior roles over the years, including vice-president of industry development and chief safety officer. She was instrumental in shaping safety standards and training programs in the oil and gas sector and collaborated with regulators, industry stakeholders and safety professionals to support safe work practices across Canada.

“Each role, each challenge, and each success has shaped me into the professional I am today, and for that, I am deeply grateful,” she said. “Reflecting on the journey, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the colleagues, peers, mentors, and industry stakeholders I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years.”

She offered a special thank-you to her team at Energy Safety Canada, noting how difficult it is to put into words what her time at the organization has meant.

“To my team and colleagues at Energy Safety Canada — thank you for your collaboration, support, and the amazing memories over the last 18 years,” she said. “What makes it so difficult to leave is not just the important work we’ve done but the people I’ve had the honour of working with.”

Campkin also outlined what retirement will look like for her — a mix of board work, travel, volunteering, and spending more time with loved ones.

“I’m excited to explore new passions, participate on Boards of Directors, travel, volunteer and spend more time with family and friends,” she said.

Despite stepping back from her formal role, Campkin emphasized that she plans to stay engaged in the health and safety community.

“While I’ll be stepping away from the workforce, I will stay connected to my wonderful network and remain an advocate for the importance of health and safety in the workplace,” she said. “Wishing you all continued success, and I look forward to staying in touch.”

Campkin’s career also included leadership roles at Bell Canada and PCL Construction. She holds an MBA from the Haskayne School of Business, a certificate in occupational health and safety from the University of Alberta, and has completed the Directors Education Program at the Rotman School of Management.
