Members of United Steelworkers (USW) Locals 7940 and 8794 have ratified new five-year collective agreements with Ivaco Rolling Mills (IRM) in eastern Ontario, securing significant gains in wages, pensions, and working conditions for approximately 435 workers.
The agreements were approved by a strong majority, with 94% of Rod Mill members in Local 7940 and 89% of Melt Shop members in Local 8794 voting in favour. The deal includes a 21% general wage increase over five years, front-loaded with an 8% raise in the first year, alongside other adjustments for trade classifications. It also eliminates wage progression, enabling all employees to reach top pay rates immediately.
“These agreements deliver real progress for workers and their families, ensuring stability and fairness while strengthening the foundation for future growth at Ivaco,” said Kevon Stewart, USW District 6 Director.
The agreements enhance pension benefits, allowing employer contributions to start earlier, upon completion of probation. Total employer contributions will reach 6%, with additional matches of up to 4% for voluntary employee contributions. Workers will also see improved life insurance, vision care, long-term disability, and prescription drug coverage.
Ivaco Rolling Mills, a key steelmaking facility in L’Orignal, transforms scrap metal into billets at its Melt Shop and produces high-quality steel coils at its Rod Mill. The new agreements include the addition of 30 job postings per unit and training premiums, creating more opportunities for career growth.
“Negotiating these agreements required professionalism and dedication on all sides,” said Richard Leblanc, USW’s Eastern Ontario Co-ordinator. “The results reflect a shared commitment to creating opportunities for workers while ensuring the long-term success of the operations.”
The United Steelworkers union represents 225,000 members across Canada, including workers in nearly every economic sector.
