$13.5 million federal youth employment and skills program opens to support agriculture sector

by Todd Humber

Applications for the federal Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) will open on Jan. 27, with $13.5 million in funding to support about 1,200 jobs in Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector.

The program, announced Thursday by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay, aims to tackle ongoing labour shortages while providing young Canadians with work experience in the industry. Employers eligible for the program include producers, agri-businesses, industry associations, Indigenous organizations, research facilities, and provincial and territorial governments.

“Employers in agriculture and agri-food will benefit from support to meet their staffing needs, while young Canadians gain the experience they need to pursue careers in the industry,” MacAulay said.

Applications for the 2025-2026 program will prioritize Indigenous employers. Employers hiring youth facing barriers to employment, such as newcomers or individuals with disabilities, will qualify for enhanced subsidies of up to 80% of salaries and benefits, capped at $14,000. Standard subsidies cover up to 50% of salaries and benefits.

The Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, said the program is part of a broader strategy to create meaningful opportunities for young Canadians. “Through the YESP, we’re investing in their potential and providing the support they need to confidently shape their futures within the agriculture and agri-food industry,” she said.

The YESP is part of the federal Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which coordinates efforts across 12 departments to address youth employment barriers. Since its inception in 2019, the YESP has facilitated jobs for about 6,200 young Canadians, including nearly 2,000 individuals facing employment challenges.

The application window runs from January 27 to February 24, 2025.
