Police in Halifax are investigating after a 19-year-old woman died at a Walmart store in the city’s west end.
Officers were called to the store on Oct. 19 at around 9:30 p.m. for a “sudden death” at the store on Mumford Road. The woman, a store employee, was found deceased, Halifax Regional Police said in a press release.
“Investigators are working closely with Occupational Health and Safety and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service to determine the cause and manner of death,” it said. “The investigation is in the early stages no further details are available at this time.”
In a statement to CBC News, Walmart spokesperson Amanda Ross said “we are heartbroken and our deepest thoughts are with the associate and their family.”
The store remains closed and Walmart is providing access to 24/7 virtual care and on-site support for its employees, it said.
A report from Global News states that “multiple sources” have told that news outlet the incident involved a large baking oven that was on at the time of the death. But neither police or Walmart have confirmed that information.
