B.C. is seeking members for its Provincial Committee on Anti-Racism

British Columbia has announced an open call for individuals interested in joining its Provincial Committee on Anti-Racism. This new committee will play a key role in advising the government on the implementation of the recently enacted Anti-Racism Act and developing a comprehensive Anti-Racism Action Plan.

The committee will consist of 11 members from diverse backgrounds who will work in collaboration with racialized communities. Their responsibilities will include developing a framework for public bodies to conduct anti-racism assessments and establishing anti-racism training standards.

To be considered for a position on the committee, applicants must be residents of British Columbia, have lived experience as a racialized person, and possess experience in anti-racism work. The government emphasizes that while the committee will primarily focus on non-Indigenous-specific racism, it will also consult and collaborate with Indigenous Peoples due to the unique colonial history of the province.

Expressions of interest for the committee positions are being accepted until June 15, 2024.

“The Anti-Racism Act is an important part of the Province’s commitment to dismantle systemic racism and build a better, more inclusive province for everyone,” the province said in a press release.

This initiative underscores the Province’s dedication to advancing racial equity and addressing systemic racism through legislative and community-based efforts.
