A Mount Pearl, N.L.-based company, Granite Management Limited, is facing charges for alleged violations of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

The charges stem from an accident that occurred in June 2022 at a wharf construction site in Gooseberry Cove, Trinity Bay, where a worker was injured after being struck by a piece of lumber moved by a crane.

The Department of Digital Government and Service NL’s Occupational Health and Safety Division conducted an investigation following the incident, which led to the charges against the company. Granite Management Limited is accused of three specific violations:

  1. Failing to notify the Occupational Health and Safety Division about the accident.
  2. Failing to ensure that workers received the necessary training, supervision, and facilities to maintain their safety.
  3. Failing to ensure that the crane operator had the required training.

Additionally, a company supervisor has been charged with a single count of failing to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all workers under their supervision.

The initial court appearance for Granite Management Limited and the supervisor is scheduled for June 27, 2024, at Provincial Court in Clarenville.
