Unifor has negotiated a new collective agreement for hospital workers in northern Ontario. The deal, ratified after a bargaining round with the Ontario Hospital Association, includes wage increases and enhanced benefits.
Lana Payne, Unifor’s National President, described the agreement as a “significant victory” for hospital workers, who have consistently advocated for fair compensation and better working conditions.
“This agreement not only enhances wages and benefits but also acknowledges the vital role they play in our healthcare system. It’s a step forward in stabilizing the healthcare workforce and ensuring our members can continue to provide exceptional care to Ontarians,” said Payne.
Six per cent hike over two years
The new agreement aligns with a recent arbitration award for hospital workers represented by CUPE and SEIU, which granted a 6% wage increase spread over two years. Unifor members will see a 3% raise each year, reflecting a collaborative bargaining strategy among the unions.
Samia Hashi, Unifor Ontario Regional Director, emphasized the unity among healthcare unions.
“Our success at the bargaining table reinforces to the employer that healthcare unions are a united front in advocating for the rights of workers across the province,” Hashi stated. “Together, we are making strides towards a more equitable healthcare system where workers are valued and respected for their indispensable contributions.”
In addition to wage increases, the agreement includes improvements to health and dental benefits, and significant enhancements to shift premiums. These changes aim to recognize the critical roles hospital staff play in patient care and the operational demands of healthcare services.
Quarantines, isolation periods
The agreement also addresses pay for quarantine or isolation periods related to communicable illnesses, underscoring the ongoing commitment to the health and safety of healthcare workers amid public health challenges.
