San Diego-based healthcare company Ainos Inc. has announced a significant technological advancement in smart manufacturing with its AI Nose, an artificial intelligence-driven device designed to detect harmful gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial environments. The company reports that the AI Nose achieved 79% accuracy in identifying 761 samples across 22 different VOCs in semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Japan.
Ainos has been refining its AI Nose technology over more than a decade, primarily for medical applications. Now, the company is venturing into the industrial sector, where the AI Nose shows promise in enhancing factory safety by detecting gas leaks, preventing contamination, and reducing fire risks. The AI Nose’s capabilities include identifying potentially hazardous substances and overheating equipment, which can be critical in preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of workers.

Ainos intends to further integrate the AI Nose into robotics systems within smart factories, enabling machines to detect changes in their environment, such as the presence of dangerous gases, and respond accordingly. This integration is expected to enhance the collaboration between robots and human workers, improving overall safety in industrial settings.
The development of the AI Nose aligns with Ainos’ broader strategy of diversifying its portfolio, which also includes AI-powered point-of-care testing (POCT) and low-dose interferon therapeutics. With its expansion into the industrial sector, Ainos aims to strengthen its position in VOC sensing technology and contribute to advancements in manufacturing safety and automation.
