The North American information technology job market continues to grow, though more slowly than it did after the post-pandemic recovery, according to newly released data in the “North America IT Hiring Kit Best Practices – Platinum 2024 Edition” report from ResearchandMarkets.com.
The report, based on surveys of employers in Canada and the United States, includes updated salary data for 73 IT positions, along with hundreds of job descriptions and hiring tools. It highlights a need for hiring managers and HR professionals to pay closer attention to workplace fit, accurate role descriptions, and engagement during the recruitment process, the report said.
“In our review of ‘hiring failures’ we have found two factors associated with which stand out. Interpersonal issues associated with these failures and poor corporate culture fit (28 percent) with the others,” the report said. Among its recommendations is a call for organizations to avoid outdated job postings and to seek out team players rather than individuals inclined to place their own achievements first.
The data points to a hiring landscape in which employers should confirm skills and motivation early, the report said. It suggests verifying candidates’ technical claims, watching for signs of inflexible attitudes, and ensuring responsibilities are clearly explained. Offering appropriate salaries and benefits, aligned with current market data, is also encouraged, the report said.
“It’s important to capture all the responsibilities of the role before you start the recruiting process,” the report said. The guidance includes a 40-page interview guide, a salary survey, and detailed position descriptions, reflecting a push for better-informed hiring decisions.
