Developing leaders is expected to be the top priority for human resources in 2025, according to a new report by McLean & Company. The global HR research and advisory firm says a tightening labour market and shifting workforce demographics are putting pressure on organizations to grow their leaders from within.
McLean & Company’s newly updated resource, Build Impactful Leadership Development Programs, outlines a four-step process to help HR leaders create initiatives that align with organizational goals. The firm says challenges often arise when leadership programs are too general or do not reflect a company’s specific needs.
“It’s time to abandon the idea that one-size-fits-all leadership development programs will meet organizational needs,” said Claire Sears, manager of Learning Solutions at McLean & Company. “Rather, targeted programs that are aligned with organizational goals make learning contextual and drive business impact. By tying to business goals and KPIs from the start, it serves the double purpose of ensuring the program is relevant and enables ROI measurement, if needed.”
The four-step process begins with creating a plan for leadership development, which includes forming a project team and reviewing existing competencies. Step two involves identifying program needs by setting learning objectives and pinpointing any gaps in current training. Step three centres on building the program and determining how to measure its effectiveness. The final step focuses on implementing and evaluating the program, including deciding who will participate and how to communicate program details.
McLean & Company says it is important to involve senior leaders from the start and encourage them to serve as champions for the program. The firm advises HR professionals to monitor progress and adapt development programs as business goals evolve.
McLean & Company draws on evidence-based research and practical tools to support organizations in creating workplaces where everyone can thrive. The firm offers services for HR professionals of all levels and focuses on strategies that align with present and future workforce needs.
