Ottawa sets up advisory council on sustainable jobs

by HR News Canada

The federal government has released details on the Sustainable Jobs Partnership Council, a newly established advisory group that will provide recommendations on policies to support workers and communities in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced the council’s terms of reference on Friday, outlining its mandate to engage with provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous groups, labour unions, industry, and other stakeholders. The council will offer independent advice to the minister based on its consultations and expertise.

“The Sustainable Jobs Partnership Council will help Canada move forward with a sustainable-jobs approach built on principles of inclusivity, economic opportunity and worker-centred policies,” Wilkinson said.

The council will work in coordination with the Net-Zero Advisory Body, which provides guidance to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change on achieving Canada’s 2050 emissions reduction targets. The two groups will align their recommendations to ensure consistency in economic and environmental policies.

The next step for the council is the appointment of its co-chairs and members, which is expected in the near future.

The initiative follows the passage of the Canadian Sustainable Jobs Act on June 20, 2024. The legislation establishes a framework for government action on sustainable employment and mandates the formation of the advisory council to support policy development in this area.
