Saskatchewan unveils new labour market strategy to support economic growth

Saskatchewan has introduced a comprehensive plan titled “Building the Workforce for a Growing Economy,” which aims to bolster its workforce to meet the demands of its expanding economy.

The strategy, announced on March 4 by Premier Scott Moe, outlines initiatives designed to prepare residents for employment, ensure industries have the necessary labour, and maintain the province’s economic momentum.

The Labour Market Strategy, as Premier Moe stated, serves as a crucial framework for developing a robust labour force capable of sustaining the province’s growing economic landscape.

“A strong labour force drives healthy economies and successful communities,” Moe said. He emphasized that through strategic investments tailored to the province’s industrial requirements, the strategy supports provincial growth and translates it into enhanced living standards for its people.

At the heart of the strategy are three primary pillars: Preparing Saskatchewan People for Jobs, Recognizing Skills in Saskatchewan, and International Recruitment. These pillars focus on aligning educational programs with industry demands, recognizing credentials obtained outside the province, and leveraging international talent to fill workforce gaps, respectively.

The initiative also aims to address the specific needs of underrepresented groups in the labour market, such as Indigenous people and individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have better access to employment opportunities. Furthermore, the strategy highlights the significance of integrating newcomers into the local workforce by streamlining the credential recognition process and providing personalized support.

Employers struggling to fill vacancies are encouraged to look internationally, utilizing the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program to enhance their workforce. The strategy underscores the value newcomers bring to the province, highlighting their role in satisfying the demand for skilled workers across various sectors, including energy, mining, agriculture, and technology.

Support for the new labour market strategy comes from within the industry as well. Donna Boyd, President of the Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada (AMC), expressed strong support for the province’s approach. “AMC is proud to support the Saskatchewan Labour Market Strategy,” Boyd said. She highlighted the alignment between AMC’s objectives and the province’s efforts to bolster the workforce, particularly in agricultural manufacturing, and praised the strategy’s inclusive approach towards Indigenous participation and disability inclusion.

The strategy aims to shape the future of Saskatchewan’s workforce, ensuring it can meet the demands of an evolving economy and contribute to the overall growth and prosperity of the province.
