Starbucks plans to introduce a new paid parental leave top-up for its Canadian store employees who work at least 20 hours a week, the company said Monday. Starting in spring 2025, benefits-eligible workers with six months of continuous service who welcome a child will receive 100 per cent of their average pay for up to 12 weeks, the company said.
Starbucks said the decision follows feedback from employees seeking more financial support during family leave. The company described the move as part of its “Back to Starbucks” plan to improve working conditions and provide what it called “competitive” benefits.
Other initiatives, the company said, include a commitment announced last month to fill 90 per cent of retail leadership positions internally, and expanded coverage for health and family planning services. According to Starbucks, employees can receive up to $40,000 in reimbursements related to fertility and family expansion, as well as $5,000 in mental health benefits.
Starbucks said nearly 17,000 workers in Canada received company stock this month through its Bean Stock program. Since 1991, 1.5 million workers globally have received $2.4 billion in stock, the company said. Starbucks also said it offers tuition reimbursements of up to $1,000 a year for post-secondary and continued learning opportunities.
