Unifor has reached a tentative collective agreement with General Motors, covering more than 1,300 workers at the CAMI Assembly and Battery Assembly facilities in Ingersoll, Ontario, the union announced on Wednesday.
The deal comes after intense negotiations between the union and GM, with Unifor’s National President Lana Payne praising the efforts of the bargaining team. “Every member of our team was instrumental in fighting for and winning this tentative agreement on behalf of all Unifor Local 88 members at CAMI,” Payne said.
The agreement impacts over 1,100 workers at the CAMI Assembly plant, which manufactures the Chevrolet BrightDrop EV 600 and EV 400 electric vehicles, as well as approximately 200 workers at the GM Battery Assembly facility, which produces Ultium battery modules.
Mike Van Boekel, Unifor Local 88 plant chair, noted that the union had specific goals going into the talks, shaped by input from the membership. “I believe that we have reached a tentative agreement that reflects those goals. I want to thank our members for their support and solidarity throughout bargaining and our entire negotiating team for working around the clock to secure a contract that we can be proud of,” Van Boekel said.
Details of the tentative deal will be presented to union members during a ratification meeting scheduled for Sunday, September 22.
Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector union, represents 320,000 workers across various industries. The union is known for advocating workers’ rights, equality, and social justice both in Canada and abroad.
