WestJet and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) have agreed to return to the bargaining table, averting further cancellations in the airline’s network. This decision follows a meeting with the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to discuss the potential need for arbitration in the ongoing negotiations between the airline and its Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and Tech Ops employees.

The CIRB announced it would require more time and additional submissions from both parties before deciding if the first collective bargaining agreement should be resolved through arbitration.

During this period, AMFA has withdrawn its strike notice, allowing negotiations to continue.

“We recognize the impact the initial cancellations had on our guests and our people, and we sincerely appreciate their patience and understanding during this time,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer. “In returning to the bargaining table, we are committed to finding a resolution to avoid further disruption to our operations.”

WestJet is working to quickly and efficiently resume normal operations while maintaining the highest safety standards, it said. The airline advises passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

Founded in 1996, WestJet operates more than 180 aircraft and serves over 100 destinations in 26 countries with a workforce of 14,000 employees.
