PCL Construction has signed a multi-year agreement with HammerTech, a safety intelligence software provider, to improve safety measures and operational efficiency across its global construction sites. The deal will give more than 4,000 PCL employees, trade partners, and up to 50,000 workers daily access to enhanced safety reporting and data management tools.

The partnership aims to support PCL’s ongoing goal of achieving “zero incidents” on job sites, a priority in an industry where safety risks remain high. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, nearly 20 percent of workplace deaths in 2022 occurred in the construction sector, with fatal falls, slips, and trips accounting for almost half of these incidents.

“Safety is a guiding principle that shapes every decision we make at PCL,” said Jim Barry, PCL’s Vice-President of Health, Safety and Environment. “HammerTech will arm our teams with the technology they need to streamline administration, collaborate more easily with our trade partners, and propel us towards our pursuit of a ‘zero-incident’ future.”

The Edmonton-based construction company, one of the largest in North America, completes over $10 billion in projects annually and has a long-standing reputation for prioritizing safety. PCL’s Chief Information Officer, Mark Bryant, said the new technology will help the company gather more sophisticated data to inform safety programs.

“HammerTech will allow us to gather more sophisticated data around our safety programs,” Bryant said. “Robust data helps inform decision-making, improve processes, and ultimately creates a safer workplace for everyone on our job sites.”

Founded in 2013, HammerTech provides software solutions to over 500 clients in North America, Australia, and Europe. The platform is used on more than 20,000 live construction projects, with over 3.6 million workers having completed safety orientations through the software. Ben Leach, Co-Founder and CEO of HammerTech, said the partnership demonstrates the firm’s ability to meet the safety and operational needs of large construction companies like PCL.

“Jim and PCL’s leadership team share the same fierce commitment to worker safety and continuous innovation as we do at HammerTech,” Leach said. “This new partnership underscores HammerTech’s ability to solve the most sophisticated safety operations and intelligence needs of a global construction industry leader.”

The deal follows HammerTech’s recent growth investment of $97 million CAD from U.S.-based private equity firm Riverwood Capital, which is expected to accelerate the company’s research and development efforts, including the integration of artificial intelligence into its platform.

PCL’s focus on safety and innovation continues to drive its operational strategy, with the company maintaining an injury rate below industry averages. The new tools provided by HammerTech are expected to help PCL further strengthen its safety programs and foster collaboration with trade partners across its projects.
