A manufacturing company has been fined $100,000 by a Saskatchewan court following a workplace incident in which a worker was seriously injured after being struck by a suspended piece of metal.
Rite Way pleaded guilty on November 12 in Regina Provincial Court to a violation of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020. The offence related to the company’s failure to ensure that lifting devices and rigging at its workplace were designed, constructed, installed, maintained, and operated safely.
The court imposed a fine of $71,428.57 along with a victim surcharge of $28,571.43, totalling $100,000. Three other charges against the company were withdrawn.
The charges arose from a Jan. 2, 2023, incident in Regina, Saskatchewan, where a worker sustained serious injuries. The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety said the incident highlights the importance of adherence to safety protocols for lifting equipment.
