More than 2,100 general labour and trades workers employed by the New Brunswick government will see wage increases under a newly signed collective agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1190.
The agreement, finalized between the provincial government and the union, provides wage increases totaling $5 per hour over four years, retroactive to 2022. Employees will receive an additional $1 per hour in the first year, followed by increases of $1.10, $1.30, and $1.60 in the subsequent years. The agreement renews annually on Dec. 16 and runs until the end of 2025.
“We are committed to working with unions to negotiate fair and reasonable agreements for everyone,” said Premier Susan Holt. “Today is a great example of what can be achieved when we work together.”
CUPE Local 1190 represents employees working in eight government departments, including mechanics, highway workers, parks workers, maintenance staff, and health supply chain workers.
Finance and Treasury Board Minister René Legacy acknowledged the contributions of these workers and the efforts made to reach a deal. “We recognize the dedication and important services the employees belonging to this group provide,” he said. “I thank the negotiating teams for their diligence in coming to the agreement, and am very pleased we now have a signed agreement in place.”
Beyond wage increases, the contract also includes higher allowances for boots and tools, as well as recognition and retention premiums for employees with 15 or more years of service.
The agreement marks the latest development in ongoing labour negotiations between the New Brunswick government and its public sector unions.
