As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to permeate various sectors of the economy, the Competition Bureau is preparing to address the evolving landscape with its upcoming summit.
Scheduled for September 16, 2024, in Ottawa and virtually, “Canada’s Competition Summit 2024: Market Dynamics in the AI Era” will gather key players from domestic and international competition authorities, regulators, businesses, non-governmental organizations, lawyers, and academics.
The event will feature a keynote speech by Lina Khan, Chair of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, delivered virtually. Participants can expect discussions on the current AI landscape, the impacts of AI on market competition, and both international and domestic regulatory approaches. The summit will also include two panels, a regulators’ roundtable, and a debate, with Canadians invited to join virtually.
In a statement, the Competition Bureau emphasized its ongoing efforts to understand AI’s implications on competition and to address potential competitive harms while promoting fair competition in AI markets. The summit marks the Bureau’s fifth annual event, continuing its tradition of expanding knowledge and engaging with stakeholders on critical economic issues.
Past summits have addressed various topics such as integrating competition considerations into policy development, fostering a greener economy through competitive markets, economic growth post-COVID-19, and enforcing competition in the digital era.
Earlier this year, the Bureau released a discussion paper on AI and competition, which was open for public consultation until July 7, 2024. This consultation is part of the Bureau’s strategy to stay ahead of emerging technologies and their impact on market dynamics.
