With Euro Cup 2024 in full swing, millions of fans worldwide are tuning in to support their favourite teams. This fervor is rippling through workplaces, with employers potentially facing challenges such as increased absenteeism and disruptions during work hours.

“As the Euro Cup brings a wave of enthusiasm, especially since this event takes place every four years, companies need to find a balance between maintaining business needs and the legal treatment of their workforce,” said Ed Matei, Legal Counsel at Peninsula Canada.

One of the primary concerns for employers is employee absenteeism. The excitement surrounding the Euro Cup may lead to late-night celebrations, resulting in employees calling in sick.

Matei said managers should treat sick day requests at face value unless there is clear evidence of dishonesty.

Assessing whether an employee’s sick day is always a tricky dance, and employer should remember that absent clear and unambiguous evidence of lying, employees’ request to make use of sick days should be treated at face value.

To manage this period effectively, employers should ensure their leave policies are clear, up-to-date, and well-communicated to all employees. Additionally, implementing a system to monitor and address unauthorized absences promptly is useful.

The Euro Cup’s excitement can also influence office dynamics, potentially boosting morale but also impacting productivity. Employers can mitigate these effects by setting up designated areas where staff can watch matches during breaks or planning fun staff events around key games. This approach can help maintain productivity while allowing employees to enjoy the tournament.

Furthermore, the passion for soccer can sometimes lead to tension among staff members. Peninsula Canada recommends fostering an inclusive workplace culture that respects all employees, regardless of their team allegiance.

“Reinforce anti-discrimination policies and provide training on respectful behavior,” it said.

Global events like the Euro Cup present unique challenges and opportunities for employers. By proactively addressing these considerations, businesses can create a positive and compliant workplace environment that balances employee enthusiasm with operational needs.
