A new report from Robert Half Canada says more than one in four workers plan to look for a new job before the end of the year, with better perks and benefits topping their list of reasons.

The talent firm’s survey of more than 1,500 professionals found 26 per cent intend to seek new work in the second half of 2025. That’s down from 38 per cent six months ago. However, another 40 per cent said they aren’t actively looking but would consider a new role if the right opportunity came along.

Among the 74 per cent who plan to stay put, more than a third cited flexibility as the most important factor. Other reasons included being well compensated (30 per cent), having a positive relationship with their manager and company culture (29 per cent), and feeling fulfilled in their work (27 per cent).

Younger workers, tech and HR staff more likely to move

The research found that certain groups are more likely to consider a job change. That includes Gen Z (36 per cent), millennials (30 per cent), and professionals in technology (38 per cent), HR (29 per cent), and marketing and creative roles (29 per cent).

For the first time since Robert Half began tracking worker sentiment, better perks and benefits ranked ahead of pay as the top motivator to switch jobs, at 39 per cent. Pay and career advancement tied at 38 per cent.

“Professionals are more carefully considering their options in the current environment,” said Koula Vasilopoulos, senior managing director at Robert Half Canada. “Many secured favourable flexible options and salaries over the last few years that they’re not willing to give up easily.”

Interest growing in switching industries and contract work

Of those thinking about a move, 91 per cent said they are open to changing industries. The top reasons include wanting to earn more (64 per cent), improve work-life balance (52 per cent), find more fulfilling work (41 per cent), and gain access to better career advancement (39 per cent).

The report also found 72 per cent of job seekers are interested in leaving a permanent role for contract work. The top draws are higher earning potential (49 per cent), more variety (40 per cent), and better work-life balance (39 per cent).

Robert Half said some myths about contract work persist, such as it being a stepping stone to a permanent role, offering limited advancement, or being hard to find. The firm said many professionals choose it as a long-term career and that companies are increasingly using contract roles to manage workloads and critical projects.

About the research

The findings are based on a survey conducted in April 2025 by an independent research firm for Robert Half. It includes responses from more than 1,500 Canadian professionals aged 18 and older.
