A new voluntary benefits platform launched this week allows Canadian employees to access personalized insurance options they can keep even after changing jobs, addressing what has been described as a gap in the benefits marketplace.

Toronto-based Perigon Life officially began operations Wednesday, offering employers a digital platform to provide staff with supplementary insurance coverage including critical illness, life, legal, identity theft, pet and home system warranty options.

Unlike traditional employer benefits that typically end with employment, insurance purchased through Perigon Life remains with employees at the same group rates if they leave their company, according to Martin Shaw, founder and CEO.

“I launched Perigon Life because Canadians are underserved by current insurance distribution models that often overlook them,” said Shaw. “I’ve seen too many people lose vital coverage when changing jobs or face barriers accessing the benefits they deserve.”

Market gap

The company positions itself as the first comprehensive voluntary benefits platform in Canada, noting these supplementary insurance options are more established in markets like the United States.

According to a March 2025 Environics study commissioned by Perigon Life, two-thirds of Canadian employees want optional add-on insurance, but only 2% would request such options from their employer.

The research also found 93% of employees say insurance and benefits directly affect their workplace happiness and retention decisions.

Platform offerings

The platform’s insurance products are underwritten by companies including Allstate Benefits, Blue Cross, ICPEI and Fetch, with options for automated payroll deductions to simplify administration.

Employers offering Perigon Life benefits can also provide employees with complementary services branded as “Perigon+” that include virtual pharmacy access, online veterinary appointments, and retail financing options.

Shaw, who previously served as CEO of NFP Canada for 11 years before becoming Chief Strategy Officer, has focused the company on making voluntary benefits both accessible and portable.

The platform also offers a separate wellness package called Perigon Care that provides mental health support and preventative care services for employers seeking more comprehensive health solutions.
