One in five workers are feeling stressed and frustrated by the behaviour of their leaders, according to a new research report from Talogy — a company specializing in talent assessment and development.

This concerning statistic highlights the critical impact of leadership on employee well-being and underscores the need for effective leadership progression.

The report evaluates the transitions, behaviors, and requirements for leaders at first, mid, and senior levels. It combines questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and scientific literature research, collecting perspectives from employees, leaders, and organizations across 42 countries. This study builds on Talogy’s previous report, “Leading in the Future World of Work,” released in 2021.

Essential leadership qualities

Talogy’s research offers a review of the qualities that employees consider essential in leadership and feedback from leaders on the challenges they face when moving from first-level management to senior roles.

A recurring theme from the previous report, the shift towards more human-centered leadership, remains prevalent in the current research. This trend signifies a move away from traditional command-and-control leadership styles towards approaches that are emotionally intelligent, engaging, and focused on enhancing employee well-being.

Key findings

Key findings from the research indicate that the primary behaviors inhibiting effective leadership include micromanaging and poor communication. The report also highlights a significant gap in leadership training, with only 38% of leaders feeling well-prepared for advancing to the next level of leadership.

The research identifies the primary challenges leaders face when transitioning to new leadership roles and outlines the differences in behaviors and qualities required as managers progress to senior positions. It also offers recommendations on how organizations can best prepare leaders for these transitions and ensure they are effective in future roles.

Talogy’s latest research emphasizes the importance of fostering human-centered leadership. The findings underscore the crucial role of emotional intelligence and employee well-being in driving leadership effectiveness.
