Ontario will provide $32 million to expand specialized mental health services for first responders and public safety personnel across the province.
The funding flows through the 2025-26 Mental Health Supports for Public Safety Personnel program to more than 200 emergency health, fire, and police services. The investment aims to address mental health challenges faced by workers in high-risk occupations.
Funding allocation
The program distributes grants to municipal services, regional governments, and First Nations communities. Most recipients will receive $25,000, while First Nations communities and services in northern Ontario will receive $30,000.
Emergency health services account for 43 funded organizations, including paramedic services, ambulance communications centres, and social services administration boards. Fire services represent the largest group with 79 funded departments across municipalities, townships, and Indigenous communities. Police services round out the recipients with 28 funded organizations, including regional forces and Indigenous police services.
Geographic reach
The funding reaches communities from Windsor to Thunder Bay and from Toronto to Timiskaming. Major urban centres receiving support include Toronto, Ottawa (through various regional services), Hamilton, London, and Thunder Bay.
Northern and remote communities feature prominently in the funding distribution. Several District Social Services Administration Boards serving northern regions received allocations, along with First Nations including Six Nations of the Grand River, Beausoleil First Nation, and Weeneebayko Area Health Authority.
The program covers diverse municipal structures including cities, counties, regional municipalities, townships, and districts across Ontario.
