PCL Construction recognized for safety and sustainability leadership by CCA

PCL Construction has been recognized for its commitment to workplace safety and environmental sustainability, earning two national awards from the Canadian Construction Association (CCA).

The company received the CCA National Safety Award for its efforts in promoting a culture of safety across job sites, as well as the Environmental Achievement Award for its role in reducing carbon emissions through sustainable construction practices.

“Safety continues to be our top priority, and by preparing and planning every day with precision, purpose and determination, we are able to achieve success,” said Mike Wieninger, chief operating officer of Canadian operations at PCL.

The National Safety Award acknowledges organizations that demonstrate leadership in fostering safe working environments. PCL reported zero lost-time incidents across its operations in 2024, including among its trade partners, a milestone Wieninger credited to proactive engagement with employees and contractors.

The company was also recognized for its role in decarbonizing Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York hotel in partnership with KingSett Capital. The retrofit project replaced aging carbon-intensive infrastructure with a modern, low-carbon energy system, reducing the historic hotel’s annual carbon emissions by 80%.

“To meet climate change commitments, the revitalization and retrofitting of existing buildings will be key,” Wieninger said. “Through strategic partnerships, investments in technology and proven experience, PCL is committed to being a leader in resilient and sustainable construction.”

The awards were presented in Quebec City during the CCA Annual Conference.
