As the final weeks of summer unfold, some Canadian employers might be grappling with a noticeable dip in workplace productivity. The seasonal slowdown, often attributed to employees returning from vacations and adjusting to changing routines, has become a common challenge for businesses.
Kiljon Shukullari, HR Advice Manager at Peninsula Canada, a human resources consultancy firm, notes that the drop in productivity during summer is a well-known issue.
“It’s no secret that productivity can decrease during the summer months,” Shukullari said. “However, employers should have policies and strategies in place to maintain the same level of focus and efficiency as other months, while still promoting a healthy work-life balance.”
A recent study underscores the issue, revealing that 41% of employees report being less productive during the summer. This decline can lead to delays in projects, missed deadlines, and a general dip in employee morale. As summer draws to a close, the need for businesses to address this slump and ensure a smooth transition into the fall becomes more pressing.
One approach employers can consider is the introduction or adjustment of flexible work schedules. For businesses that don’t currently offer such options, this period could be an ideal time to implement them. Companies already offering flexible arrangements might benefit from revisiting and updating their policies. Shukullari suggests that these adjustments can help employees maintain a better work-life balance, which, in turn, can boost productivity and job satisfaction.
In addition to policy changes, re-engaging teams with clear, focused objectives is critical. As summer distractions fade, employers are encouraged to clarify goals and ensure that every team member understands their role in achieving them.
The end of summer also presents an opportunity to strengthen team bonds. Shukullari highlights the importance of re-engaging employees with collaborative activities, such as team-building exercises, workshops, or even a company-wide celebration. These initiatives can help boost morale and foster stronger team connections.
Lastly, the emphasis on employee well-being remains crucial. Employers are urged to ensure that their workforce is taking care of both their physical and mental health. Encouraging regular breaks, providing wellness resources, and promoting a culture that values well-being are all strategies that can contribute to a healthier and more productive workforce.
