Employers who actively help their workers prepare for retirement and maintain up-to-date workplace skills have been recognized as the Top Employers for Canadians Over 40 by Mediacorp Canada Inc., organizers of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.
The annual list highlights companies providing targeted benefits and programs specifically for employees in the second half of their careers. This year’s winners emphasize retirement planning, pension contributions, and ongoing skills training.
“After employees have given their working lives to an employer, there should be a corresponding duty on the employer’s part to assist these employees when they’re no longer able to work,” said Anthony Meehan, publisher at Mediacorp.
Meehan noted that leading employers invest significantly in formal pension plans, matching RRSP contributions, and structured retirement planning programs.
Another critical component highlighted by this year’s winners is continuous skills upgrading. Ensuring employees aged 40 and older remain confident and current in their roles benefits the entire organization, said Kristina Leung, managing editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.
“Employees who feel uncertain about their future or worry about technological changes don’t perform at their full potential,” Leung said. “Ensuring all employees stay current creates a workforce that’s engaged, trained, and confident.”
The competition evaluates employers based on several key criteria, including recruitment and retention of older employees, relevant HR policies, pension plans, retirement planning, and opportunities for retirees to remain connected to colleagues through volunteering and social events.
Mediacorp Canada Inc., which founded the Top Employers program in 1999, publishes Canada’s Top 100 Employers annually. It also manages the job-search engine Eluta.ca.
