by HR News Canada

Political divisions have significantly increased tensions in workplaces in the United States since Donald Trump’s election, leading to conflicts and concerns over career impacts, a recent survey from Resume Now indicates.

The report, based on responses from more than 1,000 American workers, shows that 91 per cent have witnessed or experienced political clashes at work, with 81 per cent noting heightened tensions since Trump’s return to office.

“Political conversations are no longer just a side topic—they’re shaping workplace culture and fueling divisions,” said Keith Spencer, a career expert with Resume Now.

Seventy-two per cent of employees reported increased political discussions, with 75 per cent describing these conversations as increasingly intense. The escalating conflicts have tangible workplace effects, with 51 per cent of respondents actively avoiding collaboration with colleagues who hold opposing views.

An overwhelming 92 per cent of employees support workplace policies to limit political discussions, suggesting a strong preference for boundaries to maintain professional environments.

Employees are also concerned about the impact of political bias at leadership levels. Ninety-three per cent believe their company’s leadership exhibits political bias influencing workplace policies, decisions, and even career advancement opportunities, including promotions and raises.

“Companies must find a way to balance free expression with maintaining a professional, inclusive environment,” said Spencer.

The survey was conducted on Jan. 28, 2025.
