Liberty Defense Holdings Ltd., a provider of AI-based detection solutions for concealed weapons and threats, announced the deployment of its HEXWAVE technology in U.S. airports starting in July.
This move aligns with the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) National Amendment for Aviation Worker Security Screening.
The April 2023 mandate requires U.S. airports to implement physical screening procedures for employees accessing secure areas. The requirement was reinforced by a U.S. Court of Appeals decision, which denied delays in the screening process. To meet these requirements, airports are turning to advanced detection technologies like HEXWAVE.
Airports in Rochester and Boston
Liberty Defense recently secured awards for deploying multiple HEXWAVE units at Rochester International Airport and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. The company is in discussions with several major airports and expects a steady order flow over the next year, it said in a press release.
A third-party assessment suggests that major CAT X, I, and II airports in the U.S. will need approximately 500 systems to comply with the new screening regulations.
Rapid, contactless screening
Unlike traditional weapon detection systems, HEXWAVE utilizes millimeter wave technology, advanced 3D imaging, and AI to detect various concealed threats, including metallic and non-metallic items. The system allows for rapid, contactless screening without requiring individuals to remove common items. It can identify liquid, powder, and plastic explosives, as well as 3D-printed ghost guns, which are not detectable by standard metal detectors.
