Alberta has approved a temporary job-protected leave for Canadian Armed Forces reservists based in the province to support security operations during the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis.
The leave, announced jointly by Jobs, Economy and Trade Minister Matt Jones and Military Liaison Justin Wright, will be in effect from March 31 to August 31. It allows reservists to participate in duties related to the international gathering while maintaining their civilian employment.
“To support the operations and activities related to the June 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, I have approved a temporary ministerial regulation enabling Alberta-based Canadian Armed Forces reserves to take reservist leave,” said Jones.
The G7 Summit, which brings together leaders from some of the world’s largest economies, has not been hosted in Alberta since 2002. Security operations are expected to be extensive, and reservists are anticipated to play a key role in those efforts.
“I am confident this change will provide more capacity for the Canadian Armed Forces to support the summit’s security and ensure its success,” said Jones.
The regulation ensures Alberta employers must provide leave for eligible reservists, similar to existing provisions under provincial labour laws, but tailored to this specific event.
Wright, who also serves as the MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat, encouraged employers to support reservists who wish to participate.
“This provides our province’s reservists with a rare opportunity to serve during a significant world event,” said Wright. “For many reservists this may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Alberta’s government framed the move as part of its broader commitment to supporting members of the Armed Forces and recognizing the dual role many reservists play in their communities.
