Hasami Hair Studio in Sechelt has become the first hair salon in British Columbia to guarantee its employees a living wage, marking a milestone for the province’s beauty industry.

The certification, awarded by Living Wage for BC, means every stylist and staff member earns at least the Sunshine Coast’s living wage — currently $26.42 per hour.

That figure represents what a family of four with two working parents needs to cover basic expenses in the region.

Co-owner Mark Roberts said the decision reflects the salon’s values. “Our stylists are the backbone of our business, and their well-being is our top priority,” Roberts said in the release. “By becoming a certified Living Wage Employer, we are solidifying our commitment to a fair and thriving workplace, ensuring our team can afford to live and prosper right here in Sechelt and on the Sunshine Coast.”

Kazuko Roberts, co-owner and main stylist, added that the move is also about attracting and retaining talent. “This certification is a reflection of the deep respect we have for our talented team,” she said. “Our commitment to providing a living wage ensures we can attract and retain the best talent, which ultimately benefits our clients.”

Hasami joins a growing group of Sunshine Coast businesses adopting the living wage standard. Roberts said the salon is continuing to recruit stylists who share its focus on exceptional hair care and ethical practices, “Investing in our people is the best investment we can make for our business and for the community.”
