Toronto-based startup Borderless AI, known for its innovative global payroll solutions, has announced the appointment of Leonard Shen to its Board of Advisors. This strategic move aims to enhance the company’s focus on compliance, risk management, and international money transfers.

Leonard Shen, a seasoned compliance executive with a comprehensive background in the payments sector, joins Borderless AI following the company’s successful $27 million seed funding round. The funding is set to advance the use of generative AI in automating crucial HR functions such as the creation of global employment contracts and the onboarding of new employees worldwide through its AI agent, Alberni.

“Strong compliance programs are essential in the payments industry, which is why we are thrilled to have Leonard join our team,” stated Willson Cross, co-founder and CEO of Borderless AI. Cross highlighted Shen’s distinguished track record in leading and expanding compliance initiatives across major companies.

Shen’s career spans over four decades, during which he has held significant roles such as the Chief Compliance Officer at PayPal and led Visa’s global compliance team. His experience also includes legal and regulatory positions in both government and private sectors, including the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Senate.

Highlighting the critical role of technology in HR, Shen remarked, “There is a critical demand for advanced technology that will propel the HR industry forward as innovation and AI disrupt various sectors. I am honored to join Borderless AI’s board and work alongside key innovators who are advancing the payments and HR functions and changing the way people and teams scale around the world.”

In addition to his new role at Borderless AI, Shen also chairs the board of US Forex and Canada Forex, leading providers of international payment services.

Borderless AI leverages the capabilities of Alberni, the world’s first AI-driven agent for global HR tasks, to offer a comprehensive solution for businesses managing international teams without the need for establishing foreign entities. The company, which has raised significant capital from investors including Susquehanna and Aglaé Ventures, aims to simplify and secure global employment processes for companies expanding overseas.
