Security workers at Calgary International Airport are set to rally on Friday, July 5, to protest what they describe as severe working conditions imposed by Paladin Security.

The workers, represented by Unifor Local 2002, claim they have been denied access to necessary breaks and water, raising concerns over health and safety.

“When a company prevents workers from rest breaks and hydration, it is both a human rights and a health and safety issue,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National President.

Unifor Local 2002 members include airport screening officers, training specialists, and team leaders. The 937 members assert that poor working conditions, including denied bathroom and water breaks, have been a persistent issue. Some workers have reported being threatened with disciplinary action if they attempt to take these essential breaks.

The United Nations recognizes access to water and sanitation as fundamental human rights essential for health, dignity, and prosperity. Unifor argues that Paladin Security’s practices violate these basic rights.

“Unifor members at YYC perform important and strenuous work by ensuring the safety and security of passengers in one of Canada’s largest travel hubs and Paladin needs to show them the respect they deserve,” Payne added.

The rally will be held at noon outside Calgary International Airport, with key speakers including Sandi McManus, Unifor Director of Airlines, and Tammy Moore, President of Unifor Local 2002. The union emphasizes that this protest is crucial for drawing attention to the unacceptable working conditions faced by airport security staff.

Unifor, the largest private-sector union in Canada, represents 320,000 workers across various industries.
