The Canadian Freelance Union (CFU), traditionally known for representing communications professionals, is expanding its reach by welcoming a new group of freelance workers into its fold.

Interpreters and translators, particularly those working in provincial courtrooms, health centres, and community settings, have joined the CFU under the newly formed Interpreters and Translators Unit (ITU).

This expansion reflects the growing diversity within the freelance workforce, which now includes a broad spectrum of talents across various sectors. Despite the opportunities this growth presents, freelancers continue to face significant challenges such as unstable work conditions, lack of benefits, and minimal job security, according to a press release issued by Unifor.

Nora Loreto, President of the Canadian Freelance Union, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership: “We are excited to welcome ITU-CFU into our union family. Their decision to join us reflects a shared commitment to promoting fairness, equality, and dignity in the workplace. Together, we will strive to create a more equitable and sustainable future for all freelance interpreter and translator professionals.”

The unionization of freelance interpreters and translators marks a critical step towards addressing their common issues, such as equitable pay and professional accreditation, which impact not only the workers but also the diverse populations they serve.

Mahassen Mahmoud, a conference and court interpreter for the Arabic language, highlighted the broader implications of this move: “Interpreters and translators support so many fields—legal, medical, social services, and different types of communication avenues. We are thousands across Canada and joining the Canadian Freelance Union/Unifor is a breakthrough for our profession.”

With this new alliance, members of ITU-CFU will gain access to a range of benefits including health and insurance plans, support for grievances, and the potential for improved working conditions through collective action, according to the press release.
