Canada’s largest labour organization is pressing Prime Minister Mark Carney’s newly sworn-in cabinet to move beyond “symbolism” and deliver concrete action on worker protections, affordable housing and healthcare.

Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske said her organization, representing over 3 million workers, will closely monitor the new government’s approach to workplace issues during a period of economic uncertainty.

“Canadians are struggling with the rising cost of living, a worsening housing crisis, a strained public health care system, and job insecurity in the face of global economic instability fueled by Trump’s tariffs,” said Bruske in a statement released Tuesday.

The CLC specifically highlighted expectations for Patty Hadju, named as Minister for Jobs and Families, to address wage growth, collective bargaining rights, and workplace safety improvements.

Labour priorities

Bruske outlined several priorities the labour movement expects the new government to address, including:

  • Universal pharmacare and improved healthcare access
  • Measures to tackle corporate profits and increase wages
  • Affordable housing development
  • Union job creation in clean energy and infrastructure
  • Employment Insurance reforms

The statement also acknowledged the appointment of John Zerucelli as Secretary of State for Labour, though it noted this position falls outside of cabinet.

“The role of Canada’s Minister responsible for Labour is not just symbolic. It is critical,” said Bruske. “This is the person tasked with upholding and advancing the rights of working people across the country.”

Bruske emphasized that the labour movement stands ready to work with the government but will hold officials accountable if workers’ concerns aren’t adequately addressed.

“Workers are not waiting, and neither can this government,” she said.
