Steel manufacturer Evraz Inc. NA Canada has been ordered to pay $575,000 after a worker suffered serious injuries while inspecting sheet metal at its Regina facility.
The company pleaded guilty April 29 in Regina Provincial Court to failing to provide an effective safeguard where a worker might contact a dangerous moving part of a machine.
Court documents show the December 2022 incident occurred when the worker was inspecting the underside of sheet metal as it moved through a metal slitting machine.
The fine includes a $410,714.29 base penalty plus a $164,285.71 surcharge. One additional charge against the company was withdrawn.
The conviction falls under clause 10-4(1)(a) of Saskatchewan’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020, which requires employers to properly safeguard dangerous machinery.
The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, which brought the charges, works with Saskatchewan employers and workers on safety education, intervention and enforcement measures to prevent workplace injuries.
