Health PEI is implementing a universal masking policy across all its facilities starting Jan. 27 to curb the spread of respiratory illnesses and ease strain on the province’s healthcare system. The move comes as emergency departments and acute care units face ongoing overcapacity challenges during a severe respiratory season.
“This is not a decision we made lightly,” said Melanie Fraser, CEO of Health PEI. “Our emergency departments and acute care units have been straining from overcapacity for weeks, and we’ve yet to see the worst of this respiratory season. We must take all precautions necessary to prevent more people from getting sick.”
The policy will apply to all patients, visitors, and staff in care settings, ensuring a consistent approach to safety across Health PEI facilities. Vulnerable groups, such as those in long-term care, are particularly at risk of severe outcomes from respiratory illnesses.
“Wearing a mask not only protects yourself but also safeguards your loved ones,” said Marion Dowling, Chief Nursing, Professional Practice & Quality Officer. “It’s a shared responsibility that benefits both our individual and collective health.”
Health PEI staff will follow additional guidelines, including infection control practices such as proper hand hygiene, staying home when ill, and reporting any respiratory symptoms to supervisors.
The masking policy will remain in place until it is deemed safe to lift the measure, according to Health PEI.
