Hydro Ottawa has been named one of the National Capital Region’s Top Employers, recognized for its shift toward a technology-driven workplace and investment in employee development.
The municipally owned utility, which provides electricity to more than 364,000 customers, has embraced emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and virtual reality training to support its workforce. The transition reflects broader industry changes driven by electrification, renewable energy demand, and the rise of digital infrastructure, said Bryce Conrad, president and CEO of Hydro Ottawa.
“As the demand for electricity grows exponentially in our community, we are attracting a workforce of the future that is passionate about developing innovative solutions for an increasingly electrified world,” Conrad said. “We foster a culture where work is meaningful, and every individual is empowered to contribute.”
Hydro Ottawa invests an average of 40 hours per employee each year in training and professional development, including leadership courses and hands-on simulations. For field employees, the company has introduced virtual reality training modules, while leaders have access to a conversation AI simulator designed to enhance business and communication skills.
The company’s workforce strategy has also focused on attracting younger employees, with nearly 40 per cent of staff under the age of 35. Tuition subsidies and digital learning programs support ongoing career development, and the organization has partnered with post-secondary institutions to improve gender diversity in trades and engineering.
Beyond training, Hydro Ottawa places an emphasis on employee health and well-being through paid volunteer days, mental health programs, and fitness initiatives. A digital, therapist-led cognitive behavioural therapy program is available to employees and their families.
The company also engages in community initiatives, raising more than $150,000 for the Royal Ottawa Prompt Care Clinic and nearly $142,000 for the United Way of East Ontario through its employee fundraising campaign. Additional corporate donations have supported organizations that assist vulnerable groups in the region.
Hydro Ottawa owns and operates four subsidiaries, including Portage Power, Envari, and Hiboo Networks, which focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency solutions, and high-speed connectivity services.
