Hydro Ottawa Group has been named one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People, recognizing the utility company’s approach to training as it prepares for a generational workforce transition.

The Ottawa-based company is managing a significant knowledge transfer, with approximately 35 per cent of its employees under age 35 as long-term workers approach retirement. The company operates electricity distribution, renewable energy and telecommunications services in the Ottawa region.

Virtual reality training

Hydro Ottawa has introduced virtual reality technology to provide technical and safety training for apprentices and students. The VR systems allow workers to practice complex scenarios in a controlled environment before working in the field.

The company has also brought back recent retirees as instructors for its powerline technician program, delivered with Algonquin College, and as mentors in apprenticeship programs.

“As the energy sector undergoes its most significant transformation, we’re looking to the next generation to help us lead the way as our business continues to grow,” said Bryce Conrad, president and chief executive officer.

College partnerships

Hydro Ottawa maintains partnerships with Algonquin College and Carleton University to promote energy sector careers and encourage women to enter skilled trades, technical and engineering roles.

The company uses VR and video-based training to help employees master technical tasks before performing them in actual work situations.

This marks the 11th time Hydro Ottawa has received recognition as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People.

Hydro Ottawa Limited delivers electricity to approximately 372,000 customers in Ottawa and Casselman. The company is owned by the City of Ottawa.
