Infosys has secured a £1.2 billion, 15-year contract to build a workforce management system for 1.9 million National Health Service employees in England and Wales. The deal, announced today by the NHS Business Services Authority, will replace the organization’s aging Electronic Staff Record system and handle £55 billion in annual payroll.

The Indian technology company will develop a platform covering the full employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding through payroll, career development and retirement. The system will use AI-driven tools for workforce planning and integrate with other NHS systems, according to the company.

The contract represents one of the largest workforce technology transformations in the public sector. The new system will serve NHS staff across England and Wales, replacing infrastructure that currently manages nearly two million employee records.

“The solution will go far beyond simply replacing ESR — it will be a strategic enabler for building a workforce that is fit for the future,” said Michael Brodie, chief executive of NHSBSA. “By working with Infosys, we’re creating a modern, data-driven solution that will help the NHS better attract, retain and support its people.”

The Future NHS Workforce Solution will include features designed to reduce administrative burden for healthcare workers. Employees will manage their personal information through the platform, and the system will connect with existing NHS technology infrastructure.

Infosys was selected after a competitive procurement process based on its track record in large-scale digital transformation programs, according to the NHSBSA.

The Bengaluru-based company employs more than 320,000 people and provides digital services and consulting in 59 countries. Infosys trades on stock exchanges in India and New York.

“We are honored to be chosen by the NHSBSA to deliver generational change for employees of the NHS in England and Wales through the Future Workforce Solution,” said Salil Parekh, chief executive officer of Infosys.

The project supports the NHS 10-year Health Plan, which aims to modernize workforce infrastructure for healthcare workers.
