Labour group urges Hudson’s Bay Company to prioritize workers in bankruptcy process

by HR News Canada

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is calling on Hudson’s Bay Co. to prioritize its workers as the struggling retailer navigates bankruptcy proceedings that could impact nearly 9,000 jobs.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Canada’s largest labour organization said it is demanding transparency from HBC regarding store closures, layoffs, and severance protections. The CLC also urged the federal government to ensure that employees’ Employment Insurance (EI) benefits are not reduced because of severance and termination payments the company may owe.

“These commitments are not merely legal obligations but a matter of fundamental fairness and respect for the dedicated employees who have contributed to the company’s success,” the CLC said.

HBC, one of Canada’s oldest retailers, is undergoing restructuring as it faces financial difficulties. The union group said it will not stand by while workers “are left in the dark” about their futures.

“We demand that HBC honour its commitments—wages, benefits, and severance must be paid,” the CLC statement said. “No backroom deals, no vague promises—workers deserve full transparency.”

The organization said it stands ready to defend workers’ rights and financial security throughout the process, urging the company to “act with responsibility and compassion.”
