Manitoba Hydro gas workers secure wage increases, better scheduling in new contract: Unifor

by HR News Canada

Gas workers at Manitoba Hydro will see wage increases of up to 14.5 per cent over the next three years following the ratification of a new collective agreement with Unifor Local 681. The contract, approved on March 18, also includes changes to scheduling aimed at improving work-life balance.

“This agreement delivers real gains that recognize gas workers’ important and skilled work keeping Manitobans safe and warm,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.

The deal follows a strike mandate vote in early February, where 90 per cent of Local 681 members supported job action after negotiations stalled.

Beyond wage increases, the contract provides a signing bonus of up to $1,800 and enhanced overtime pay. It also marks the first time the agreement will begin with a formal territorial acknowledgement, which the union said reflects its commitment to reconciliation.

“Bargaining tough has ensured Manitoba Hydro gas workers receive the respect, wages, and working conditions they deserve,” said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle.

Unifor Local 681 represents 225 front-line gas workers at Manitoba Hydro.
