A union representing food production workers said it has reduced the number of permanent layoffs at Minute Maid’s Peterborough, Ont., facility to six employees, down from an initial 38 workers who faced job loss.

United Food & Commercial Workers Local 175 negotiated the retention of 32 positions after Minute Maid notified the union of planned layoffs on July 24, 2025. The 32 workers will maintain full-time employment at another company facility, according to the union.

The union also secured an enhanced severance package for the six employees who were permanently laid off.

Collective agreement provisions applied

“The Union worked to ensure that our members at Minute Maid were treated fairly and supported throughout the layoff process,” said Kelly Tosato, president of UFCW Local 175. “We worked with the employer to apply provisions of the collective agreement for the remaining 32 employees affected by this layoff.”

The affected workers are primarily long-term employees with significant tenure at the company, according to Tosato.

“A large number of our members at Minute Maid are long-time employees with many years of service with the company,” Tosato said. “The members take great pride in their work and the quality products they manufacture, and the Union will always be there to support them.”
