MyCreds | MesCertif has launched a mobile digital credential solution designed to help skilled trades workers move between provinces more easily, addressing federal government calls to reduce labour mobility barriers.
The new mobile app allows trades workers to store verified credentials on their phones and enables real-time verification by employers, inspectors and regulators across provincial boundaries. The solution will launch in Nova Scotia by fall 2025 before expanding nationwide.
Mobile-first approach targets job site needs
The digital wallet and verifier app uses MDOC/MDL technology, the same secure standards adopted globally for digital identity verification. Workers can access their credentials on job sites without paperwork delays, while employers can verify qualifications instantly.
“Built for mobility, designed for trades — that’s our commitment with this addition to the established national network,” said Jodi Tavares, executive director of ARUCC MyCreds | MesCertif. “Canada’s tradespeople deserve a system that recognizes their skills no matter where they work. This technology helps get them on the job faster, without being bogged down by paperwork or fragmented systems.”
The platform operates in both official languages and connects with existing provincial apprenticeship authorities, safety regulators and trade certification bodies.
Federal priorities drive credential modernization
The initiative aligns with priorities outlined in the recent federal Speech from the Throne, which emphasized reducing internal trade barriers and improving worker mobility to address national labour shortages.
MyCreds developed the solution with technology partner MATTR, building on the Virtual Skills Passport project previously funded by the Ontario government. The organization operates Canada’s only bilingual, non-profit national credential network.
Established network expands to trades sector
More than 150 colleges, universities and government agencies already use the MyCreds network to issue digital credentials. The Association of Registrars of the Universities and Colleges of Canada owns the platform, which has supported learner mobility for four years.
The trades credential solution aims to serve regulators, apprenticeship authorities, safety organizations and skilled workers across all provinces. The system provides secure mobile access, onsite verification capabilities and cross-provincial recognition through a trusted network of credential issuers and verifiers.
