New Brunswick moves to ease entry for out-of-province professionals

by Todd Humber

New Brunswick has introduced legislative amendments aimed at making it easier for professionals from other provinces to join the province’s workforce, part of a broader effort to reduce interprovincial labour mobility barriers.

The proposed changes to the Fair Registration Practices in Regulated Professions Act would allow skilled workers to begin working in New Brunswick once the province’s regulatory bodies receive proof of their credentials from another Canadian jurisdiction. Final registration decisions would still rest with the appropriate regulatory authority.

“With potential tariff-related disruptions and an uncertain economic climate, workers and businesses need the ability to adapt quickly to quickly changing circumstances,” said Jean-Claude D’Amours, acting minister of post-secondary education, training and labour.

The legislation, if passed, would shorten the time it takes for qualified professionals to start working in their fields upon relocating to New Brunswick. The province said the move supports a more flexible labour market and helps employers respond to evolving economic conditions.

The act, first passed in 2022, is designed to ensure fair treatment for applicants and to streamline the licensing process for those already certified in other provinces.

D’Amours said the government will continue working with regulatory bodies, calling them “excellent partners” in supporting the province’s labour market needs.
