Nokia Bell Labs and Vale, a Brazil-based mining giant, have announced a research agreement aimed at developing a cognitive monitoring network service to enhance productivity and safety in mining operations. This collaboration will leverage Nokia’s technology to create a network that integrates data from mine production systems—such as hauling trucks and autonomous drillers—with connectivity performance indicators.

The partnership builds on Nokia and Vale’s existing relationship at Vale’s Carajás iron ore mine, the world’s largest open-pit iron mine, located in Brazil. The two companies aim to advance mission-critical communications within hazardous mining environments by employing a holistic digital twin technology. This approach will allow for real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance of network systems, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency.

Lelio Di Martino, General Manager of Nokia’s Cognitive Digital Mine Venture, noted the importance of this initiative in modernizing mining operations. “Mines are complex, multi-domain and multi-stakeholder environments where low agility and high uncertainty can significantly impact profitability. This collaboration will drive a revolution in optimizing mining processes and advancing cognitive services,” he said.

Mario Azevedo, Vale’s Global Manager of Engineering and Technology Projects, emphasized the strategic importance of connectivity in enhancing operational safety and efficiency. “Integrating advanced connectivity technologies allows us to implement real-time monitoring, optimize processes, and maintain a safer working environment,” he stated.

The project, which employs Nokia Bell Labs’ NiX (Nokia Industrial eXperience) platform, will contribute to the development of Nokia’s Network Cognitive Digital Mine initiative. This venture is designed to enable intelligent, automated planning and operational management in mines, an industry under increasing pressure to enhance both productivity and safety standards.
