Ontario is observing its first Hospitality Workers Appreciation Day, a provincial recognition established through Bill 67 at Queen’s Park to honour frontline workers in the hospitality sector.

The annual observance, supported by MPP Ernie Hardeman, comes as the province’s hospitality workforce — spanning restaurants, hotels and events — continues to face ongoing pressures around visibility and workplace conditions.

“I am proud that my bill to recognize Hospitality Workers’ Appreciation Day has passed and that we are now celebrating it for the first time,” said Hardeman. “This is a meaningful opportunity to thank the hardworking people who support our communities every day for their dedication, professionalism, and care.”

Harrison Staffing marks the occasion

Toronto-based Harrison Staffing, an event staffing company with more than 300 staff serving communities across Canada, is marking the day as part of its broader advocacy for hospitality workers.

Founder and CEO Danny Murrell, who began his career as a frontline worker, says the recognition reflects values the company has held since its founding.

“For me, hospitality has always been about creating opportunities and a sense of belonging, like the ones I had and was fortunate enough to feel when I first came to Canada,” Murrell said. “Today, we celebrate the dedication of hospitality workers who bring Ontario’s communities and businesses to life, every single day.”

Push for year-round recognition

Murrell said the day should signal a broader shift in how frontline workers are treated, not just a single day of acknowledgment.

“Hospitality Workers Appreciation Day is more than symbolic,” he said. “It’s an important step towards a future where frontline workers are properly valued and given the tools they need to succeed. Recognition must continue beyond today — through equitable treatment and fair opportunities for everyone in our industry.”

Harrison Staffing is calling on employers and businesses across Ontario to mark the occasion by acknowledging the contributions of hospitality staff in their organizations.
