Food and beverage manufacturers face mounting risks from airborne contaminants that can spoil products and harm workers, according to new research from Camfil Canada.
The Toronto-based air filtration company released findings showing that fine particulate matter, bacteria, allergens, volatile organic compounds and mold spores pose significant threats to food safety and employee productivity in production facilities across the country.
These risks have grown worse due to environmental challenges including wildfire smoke and increasingly humid conditions in Canada, the company said. Without proper air filtration, contaminants can cause product spoilage, foodborne illnesses and supply chain disruptions.
Filtration systems reduce contamination risks
Advanced air filtration systems using MERV 14-A and HEPA filters can address these challenges by maintaining high purity standards in critical processing areas, according to Camfil’s research.
“Effective air filtration plays a major role in extending product quality and shelf life, inhibiting fat oxidation, and reducing food waste,” said Berni Baier of Camfil Canada. “By removing airborne contaminants like fine particulate matter and allergens, we not only improve workplace conditions but also mitigate the environmental impact on surrounding communities.”
The company said proper filtration systems can reduce product recalls, ensure regulatory compliance and provide safer workplaces for facility staff.
Regulatory gaps leave manufacturers vulnerable
While the Canadian Food Inspection Agency establishes guidelines for food safety, explicit standards for air filtration in food processing facilities remain limited, Camfil noted.
This regulatory gap allows for inefficient air filtration practices that could compromise product safety and worker health, the company said.
Camfil Canada recommends manufacturers use Total Cost of Ownership analysis when selecting air filters to identify energy-efficient systems that reduce long-term costs while delivering operational benefits.
The company offers tailored air filtration solutions designed to address the specific challenges facing food and beverage manufacturers.
